I am setting up x-cart but i need to integrate it with and existing static web site that is more about information and education. The look and feel of the site doesn't seem like something i can duplicate with x-cart static pages, primarily on the home page. Is there a way to create separate smarty templates, with extremely different layouts and apply them to sections of the site, or can i put some php code into the existing static pages to keep the users session and cart information with as they travel through the website?

The cart info is stored in a cookie, so the data should be safe as a user goes through the static portion of the site. I run a few sites like this and never had a user complain about losing their cart info when they went to the static pages. Getting the cart info to appear on the static pages is another issue all together though.....
