How do I enable banners on the homepage, either vertically or horizontally? Also, is there a way to enable different banners on different products/categories?

What do you mean by banners? Simple graphics or ad-rotations? Also, please put your X-Cart version in your signature. Edit profile, enter version, enter password, save. Thanks!

I mean ad rotatation. I see a minibanners.tpl file. what is that used for?

You would need to get some sort of ad-rotation script and add it to whatever template you would like it to appear in. head.tpl for the header, home.tpl for the side menus, etc.
