Alright I am stymied

How can I change the word "Other" that appears in the state value on the registration page when a user selects a country with no states?

I want to change it to - as Other looks pretty stupid on a shipping label.

I have looked in:
the languages table
change_states_js.tpl
states.tpl
register_states.tpl
register_billing_address.tpl

and my eyes are starting to cross >.<

Better yet is there any way to actually have it be empty when there is no state rather than - and still have a successful registration without the required field error?

Where is this Other?

Login as admin. Follow the link 'Languages' in the 'Administration' box. Then select language to edit, i.e. English, etc. In the 'Select topic' box select 'Labels'. In the field next to it type Other and press button 'Go'.
You will see that variable 'lbl_other' defines 'Other'. You can either completely remove word 'Other' in the value field for this variable, so it would not appear at all in the state field for countries without states, or type something else you would like to appear instead of 'Other'. The same procedure should be done for each language in your store if it is multilingual.

The problem is changing the lng value does not affect what appears on the register page when a user selects a country with no states.

No matter what I still get Other. Even if I hard code what I want in the states.tpl file I still get other

I went another way and in the countries table I turned off states for the countries that don't have states and now when a user selects a country with no states the states filed changes to a message that says "there are no states available for this country" and the correct value that I have in the lang table now is what is given to the customers state value

Sure. That would be another solution, which I was going to offer you, but it appears that you managed to solve it yourself. The reason I didn't mention turning off the states in admin panel is because you told in your post that you wanted to write something else instead of 'Other'.

Well, either way I am glad that we were able to solve at least something in X-Cart, because there are a lot of things in this shopping cart, which do not make sense.

anybody knows how to remove other. I tried editing states.tpl and languages but Other still pops up.

Please help. We need it so that customer can enter different states when selecting different countries not for it to display a message that says states does not exist
