I looked all around, so I hope this is not a repost, if so please point me in the right direction. But I would like to modify the placement and look of the search bar? Can anyone tell me where to get started? What .tpls to edit, etc..

Just move this line of code from head.tpl to wherever you want the search box to appear:

{ include file="customer/search.tpl" }
