I'm interested in creating an alternate, super-simplified, administration area so that some clients may login to a page where they may view sales information ONLY.
The don't need access to any other portions of X-Cart, so why complicate their lives with sections they don't need. Has anyone done this? I'm looking for some suggestions as to where to begin. Which pages should I begin to hack away at. Thanks!

If you do not want them to really have any access to anything besides the sales, then create an HTML page and simply secure it via .htaccess anmd just provide a hyperlink to it from inside the store or email etc. If you want it inside the store with the navigation and not an outside page without the navigation, then create a static page and again, secure it with .htaccess

There are some tips in this thread about limiting access to areas depending on the username:
http://forum.x-cart.com/viewtopic.php?t=12234 This should work great in this case. I also plan to try to implement it shortly myself...on a new store. If you get it working soon, be sure to drop us some tips.
