We are modifying the Contact Us form and have changed the contactus.tpl file, but where do we change whether a field is required or not? Even if we take a required field out of the .tpl file, the form still won't send.

Admin Area > General Settings > Contact Us Form Options :: at least for 4.0.4 that is where it's located. I can't imagine that it wasn't part of the Admin Area before though.

We're using 3.5.6 - there isn't a 'Contact Us Form Options' under 'General Settings'

you need to edit include/help.php too

remove the fields you dont want to check for

    $fillerror = (empty($contact["firstname"]) || empty($contact["lastname"]) || empty($contact["b_address"]) || empty($contact["b_city"]) || empty($contact["b_country"]) || empty($contact["b_zipcode"]) || empty($contact["phone"]) || empty($contact["email"]) || empty($contact["subject"]) || empty($contact["body"]));
