Can anyone tell me what template(s) / file(s) to edit to add additional items to the left and right navigation?

skin1/customer/home.tpl

You'll see the {include} for the files on the left and right that you need to open to edit.

You can also enable the debug console under general settings in the admin for a list of all .tpl files that make up the page your viewing.
