We want to have a few different stores, all with different looks. Does the platinum version allow for this or do we need a separate XC install for every store? I dont mind that but just wondering if there's another solution.

If your stores are based on different providers, as per Platinum, then you could use BCSE's X-Mall to create the separate stores with different looks:

Hi,

Out of the box X-Cart Platinum looks like a single storefront(please, see the demo)

However if you wish to add kind of sub-stores you can do it out of the box by either putting all products from one vendor in a certain category or assigning one manufacturer to them. In both cases there will be a dedicated page with a customizable logo and description available at www.yourstore.com/category1/ or .../manufacturer1/

And in case you are looking for something different, please, make sure the you check Appendix B of the license agreement to avoid any misunderstanding.
