Default load times for .css and .js

I just ran a page speed test using pingdom.com/fpt The 2 parts of my home page that are taking the longest are the

_ee96420dc254c4c083427940408ef707.css - 3.21 seconds
and
_9cf30ecf0233fdf032488c2f15c81db0.js - 2.20 seconds

files. Is there anyway to speed these up more? I use the built-in x-cart speedup tools. I don't really want to minify since that makes the code harder to work with and from what I've seen online, can sometimes mess with the code to much that it breaks.

What have you all done?

Minify has it's advantages. While it does make it harder to work with, you can alwys "un-minify" or keep your original copy. When it comes to the template files in particular, generally you're not doing daily editing, so having a master file around that you edit once every few months in order to get a boost of speed is usually a good thing.

That said was the test you ran for the "www.uscandleco.com" domain or something else? It seems when you posted the link it didn't copy all the way through and just shows "pingdom.com/fpt" instead of the actual URL.

If it is that domain, then you've got some serious DNS/Database/Server speed issues. When I ran the test here, it took nearly 3.5 seconds of "wait time" before it even started to show the website. Thats an even bigger concern than the CSS and JS files.

Yep, that was the domain. I also ran some tests using gtmetrix and page load time ranged from 76 seconds to 3 seconds. My host has been having issues. I actually just put an order in with you guys to move my site to you. I'm in the process of setting up my test site now actually. Thanks for the info on the minify. Once I get my site switched over I may mess with that too.
Thanks.

Looking forward to having you as a client with us. Once everything is setup on our servers, our guys can do a run through on things and see if there's anything odd that could be going on at a code level. Many times those long "wait times" on reports are caused by bottleneck of the CPU/Memory & Database - sometimes even the writing to disk, but basically it's the time for a page to generate before being sent to the user. RARELY would this be caused by insufficent bandwidth at your web hosts level, more times than not, it's bad server configuration or bad software coding. And since we run more than 1,000 X-Cart's on our servers, many times we can rule out both bath server configuration and bad X-Cart code in one shot.

Fingers crossed, but as soon as things are ready to go on our servers, we'll want to re-visit this situation and see what else might be happening on the site.

That sounds great. I should be ready pretty soon. Your expertise with x-cart is one of many reasons I want to switch over to you all.
