Default permissions editing question

Hi All,
It has been a while since I have been in the forums as I have not been working on any xcart sites.

I was contacted by a client that I built and turned over the day to day running of to about 18months ago. The site is built on version 4.1.11- gold When I turned over the site everything was working a OK.

They contacted me because they mucked up somethings that I was able to fix, but one I am still having the edit templates editor to work. I can make changes to the templates using FTP which is how I personally prefer to do it so I do not accidentally over write something, but the online editor is returning a permissions error when I try to make a change and save it with the online editor.

I looked at the templates_c directory and see that they are set to 755 I am wondering if this is correct or should it be something else. ( 777)

As always thanks to anyone that can give me a clue here.

Best

Templates need to be 666, but they really shouldn't be left at 666. You should only change them when you need to edit them, and then change them back to 644.

Hey Balinor,

Thanks for the reply. Maybe its me, not sure if I posted the question correctly, or completely. If look at the files in the template_c directory they look to be set to 644
but the directory folder ( templates_c) is set to 755

I am wondering if this needs to be 777- and leave the files inside alone as they are set to 644

Everything else on the site seems to be functioning fine, its just the editing templates with the internal editor that is a problem.

This is a gold version of the site, and wile stable it is a few updates back and a gold version. It has been awhile since I have had to work on any of this stuff. Usually it has been a set it once and forget about it. Although they won't admit doing anything wrong I have found other places on this particular site where the client ( former) tried making changes in a very unorthodox ( being kind to them) manner

Again appreciate the reply- you know this stuff so much better than me

Best

No, the files themselves need to be writable to be saved - which means 666. 644 is not writable.

Got it- I think.
All of the files in the template_c are currently at 644
if any of these need to be worked on with the internal editor they need to be set to 666 in order to save them.
After making the change return the setting of the file back to 644

- is this the default? I get why this is set to 644 but a bit confused why the internal xcart template editor would not be working out of the box to allow template editing using their editor? Am i missing something.

As mentioned earlier I never really use the internal editor. I am use to editing the .tpl file on my desktop and then loading it to the server via FTP, this was I always have a backup copy on the desktop that I can revert to as I make a copy before I start changing anything in the template file.

Thanks again for the help. Its greatly appreciated.

Best

No, not templates_c...that's the cache. The templates are in the skin1/ directory And yes, the templates need to be writable for the internal editor to work.

Thanks Balinor,

I think I finally got it.
Like I said its been a while since i Have had to work on this site ( and this version)
I was reading some old posts in the forums where I was misinformed to think I should be looking at the template_c folder.

Thanks again

Best
