My customers don't register and I don't want that to be displayed on the website. Right now it's in the header (I think - I don't even know from which template I would remove it) and probably on the checkout pages as well, though I'm using the trial version and checkout is disabled, so I can't check.
Anyway to remove all traces of this?

Well I hate to point out what seems obvious, but in General settings:
Uncheck - Disable anonymous checkout Uncheck - Enable sign-up for membership That might do it, but I've never set those options. I convinced my client that it was valuable data to maintain customer contact info, if only first/last name and the email.

You can remove the register link if you want to. You can remove the login info from register form. You can't remove the form from checkout - your customers will have no way of entering their personal and shipping info.

I just added the "<!-- -->" comment tags around the code that pulls up the login and register links. Hope this helps.

Don't use those kinds of comments in Smarty templates. The proper way to comment out code in Smarty is:
{* Commented out code *}
