Default Smarty Templates? Why

I am just wondering why x-cart is still using smarty templates still, will it ever use a different system?

What does the average user think?
Developers?

Personally I find it one of the most complex learning curves around, I remember when I first used x-cart, I knew nearly most of it, but have now forgotten, as far as I know I have not come across any other software that users them, so the learning curve has gone for me.

What do you all think overall of smarty?

By the way anyone know of a purpose driven software for Smarty to edit tpl............ Dreamweaver has a terrible time with it, I would like some good software where you can see what's going on in real time?

Personally, I really like Smarty. Aptana put out an Eclipse php plugin that does Smarty syntax highlighting. It works with Aptana Studio 1.5. Studio version 2 doesn't have Smarty support yet though.
