Is there anyone who can help me on the way of a mod or tweak to get the navigation perform differently?

The main horizontal navigation is only showing root categories (that's already avaialable);
but when you click on one of the main categories, on the left its subcategories appear;
so before that nothing is shown.

An example

main cat1 - main cat2 - main cat3
subcat 1a
subcat 1b
etc

Main cat1 has been clicked upon, subcats 1a and 1b appear/show

main cat1- main cat 2 - main cat 3
subcat 2a
subcat 2b
etc

Main cat2 has been clicked upon, subcats 2a and 2b appear/show

It would take some decent customization to get access to the sub cats from outside the root level category. Or you could use the fancy categories mod, although that mod is a pretty big drain on performance.
