I have this box of Special with the gift certificates in it and I don't want it..
how do i remove it?

Are you using gift certs at all? If you don't need them disable the module in admin/modules and the box will disappear. If you use gift certs and want just to hide the box open skin1/customer/home.tpl, find "special.tpl" include and comment it out by surrounding it with {* code here *}
