Anyone happen to know what $k is defined as? I cannot find it anywhere.

$k, and variations of it, like $k1, $key, etc., is used in a bunch of places, as a variable to hold the "key" in a key/value pair. So,

If you tell us where (what file) you see it referenced, we might be beter able to help you track down its assignment.
