Is there any way to make breadcrumbs lowecase?

Change the class in the stylesheet - they probably have a text-transform: uppercase style applied to them.

While both above solutions are plausible, having worked on this file I know the solution to be:

Open skin1/location.tpl and remove all instances of |upper
