hmm just got this nasty message- does this have anything to do with the images i just loaded? or is this something else

That warning can mean your host is having problems with the DB server, or it could also mean you are on shared hosting and the quota for connections has been met. Who's your host?

I AM having the same problem. Got exactly the SAME message when I tried the x-cart installation wizard.

Fatal error: Can't connect to the MySQL server.

That's a different error...that means you supplied the incorrect data for the database in the setup screen. Double check your database name, password and username and also the name of the server (usually localhost) that it is on.
