Default Changing skins picture and text for an Xcart Dummie!

Hi all, I'm an Xcart Dummie! I just bought Xcart Gold V 4.0.18(Win XP) with the "Artistic Tunes" skin. Would some kind sole tell me (in plain english) how to change the skins picture and the wording of "Company Name"? also how to get my products i've added into the front home page instead of the "demo" stock they show. I've look for hours through the forum, but i just get lost! My site is www.seq.net.au/shop/home.php Please someone save me from getting the Kojack syndrome (No hair)
Thanks

You should have a file called 'README.Artistic Tune' that came with the skin. It has step by step instruction for replacing it with your logo. If not, I'll attach my copy of it next time (I have a different skin but same logic should apply).

When importing products with CSV files, you can choose to drop the original products. Do this once if you have the default X-Cart products in there. Doing it again will drop the products you added which is not a good idea unless that's your goal.

Use Webmaster Mode to edit the templates and language variables, it's the easiest way to start out.

CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS
==========================

The Macromedia Flash movie 'flash_logo.swf' supplied with 'Crystal Blue' skin and included into the 'head.tpl' template of your X-Cart based store after skin installation is meant to serve as a container for your company logo (business name). By default, in the place of your actual company logo, the movie 'flash_logo.swf' demonstrates the default company logo 'company_name.swf' which says "COMPANY LOGO". To start using your actual company logo instead of the default logo, you will need to replace the file "company_name.swf" with a file containing a logo of your own. Your own company logo may be contained either in a JPG image file or in an SWF movie file. For instructions on how to replace the file 'company_name.swf' with your own logo, please refer to the section "HOW TO REPLACE THE DEFAULT COMPANY LOGO WITH A LOGO OF YOUR OWN".

If you want your company logo to be a flash movie, but you haven't got such a movie, you can refer to the section "HOW TO CREATE A FLASH MOVIE WITH YOUR LOGO" for a short explanation of how your company logo can be made into a flash movie.

If you do not want to use the movie 'flash_logo.swf' on your website at all, you can replace it with an image. Refer to the section "HOW TO REPLACE 'FLASH_LOGO.SWF' MOVIE WITH AN IMAGE" for details.

HOW TO REPLACE THE DEFAULT COMPANY LOGO WITH A LOGO OF YOUR OWN
================================================== =============
1. Create a new company logo. It must be a JPG graphic file or an SWF movie file (Macromedia Flash movie).
Recommended logo image sizes are 209 x 44 pixels for the clock color scheme,
185 x 55 pixels for the crystal color scheme,
184 x 31 pixels for the education color scheme,
186 x 33 pixels for the tour color scheme.
Please note that there will not be any transparent areas in the JPG image.

2. Save the logo file (for example, as 'company_name.jpg' or 'company_name.swf').

Note: You can save your logo file with any name; however, if the file name differs from 'company_name.swf', modification of the 'head.tpl' template will be required.

3. Go to X-Cart Admin area.

4. Click on 'Edit templates' in the Administration menu, the 'Browse templates' form will appear.

5. Click the directory 'images', then select 'custom'.

6. Select the 'Rewrite file if exists' check box near the 'Upload' subsection.

7. In the 'Upload' subsection click on 'Browse' and locate the image file which contains the new company logo.

8. Click on the 'Upload' button.

9. If the file you have uploaded is named other than 'company_name.swf', modify the template 'head.tpl' as follows:

9.1. Click on 'Edit templates' in the Administration menu, then find the file 'head.tpl' and click on it.

9.2. Find all the occurencies of the 'company_name.swf' substring in this template and replace them with your file name.

9.3. Click on the 'Save' button to save the changes.

10. Open the customer front end in a browser window and make sure the new logo appears at the top of the page. You may have to clear the browser cache to apply the changes.

HOW TO CREATE A FLASH MOVIE WITH YOUR LOGO
==========================================

To create a new flash document with a logo of your own:

1. Run Macromedia Flash editor.

2. Select File > New. On the General tab, select Flash Document. A blank document will be created.

3. To add your own logo to the document, select Import > Import to Stage and locate the image file which contains the new company logo.

4. To save your document, select File > Save As and save the document with a new name.

5. Select File > Publish Settings. On the Formats tab, select the Flash checkbox and specify a file name with which you want the flash movie to be saved. Click on the 'Publish' button. The flash movie file with the extension .swf will be created in the directory where you saved the Flash document at Step 4.

6. Follow the instructions provided in the section HOW TO REPLACE THE DEFAULT COMPANY LOGO WITH A LOGO OF YOUR OWN with the created flash movie.

HOW TO REPLACE "FLASH_LOGO.SWF" MOVIE WITH AN IMAGE
================================================== =

If you want to disable the movie 'flash_logo.swf' shipped with 'Crystal Blue' skin, you can replace the movie with an image:

1. Click on 'Edit templates' in the Administration menu, then find the file 'head.tpl' and click on it.

2. Find the substring

<TD valign="top"></TD>

and uncomment it.

3. Find the substring

<TD valign="top"><OBJECT classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0" width="341" height="206" id="flash_logo" align="top"><PARAM name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /><PARAM name="movie" value="{$ImagesDir}/custom/flash_logo.swf" /><PARAM name="menu" value="false" /><PARAM name="loop" value="false" /><PARAM name="quality" value="high" /><PARAM name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" /><PARAM name="FlashVars" value="not_home_page={if $main eq "catalog" and $current_category.category eq ""}0{else}1{/if}&company_name_path={$ImagesDir}/custom/company_name.swf&home_path={$http_location}/customer/home.php" ><EMBED src="{$ImagesDir}/custom/flash_logo.swf" FlashVars="not_home_page={if $main eq "catalog" and $current_category.category eq ""}0{else}1{/if}&company_name_path={$ImagesDir}/custom/company_name.swf&home_path={$http_location}/customer/home.php" loop="false" menu="false" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="341" height="206" name="flash_logo" align="top" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" swLiveConnect="true" /></OBJECT></TD>

and comment or remove it.

4. Click the 'Save' button to save the changes.

When the changes are saved, the 'flash_logo.swf' movie will be replaced by an image file 'mountain_logo.jpg'. You are unlikely to be able to use this image as your company logo, so what you need to do next is replace the image 'mountain_logo.jpg' with your actual company logo image.

To replace the existing 'mountain_logo.jpg' logo with a logo of your own:

1. Create an image file with your company logo. Recommended image height is 206 pixels.

Note: If your image height differs from the recommended value, modification of the template 'head.tpl' may be required.

2. Save the image file.

Note: You can save your image file with any name; however, it would be easiest to name it 'mountain_logo.jpg'. If you name your file differently, modification of the template 'head.tpl' will be required.

3. Go to X-Cart Admin area.

4. Click on 'Edit templates' in the Administration menu, the 'Browse templates' form will appear.

5. Click on the directory 'images', then select 'custom'.

6. Select the 'Rewrite file if exists' check box near the 'Upload' subsection.

7. In the 'Upload' subsection click on 'Browse' and locate the image file which contains the new company logo.

8. Click on the 'Upload' button.

9. If the name of the file you have uploaded differs from 'mountain_logo.jpg', modify the 'head.tpl' template as follows:

9.1. Click on 'Edit templates' in the Administration menu, then find the file 'head.tpl' and click on it.

9.2. Find the substring

and replace mountain_logo.jpg as well as the width and height values with the actual values.

9.3. Click on the 'Save' button to save the changes.

10. Open the customer front end in a browser window and make sure the new logo appears at the top of the page. You may have to clear the browser cache to apply the changes.

HOW TO ENABLE/DISABLE FLASH MOVIES
==================================

You can change the way flash movies are played on the home page and on the other site pages. For the moment, a full animation cycle is used for the
home page, while the other pages use a short cycle. All the pages other than the home page play the short anymation cycle every 60 seconds.

It is possible to disable the short anymation cycle that is played on the site pages. To do so, you need to edit the value of the FinalImage parameter
in the file skin1.conf.

- to turn off the short anymation cycle and use a static image:
FinalImage = "static"

- to enable the short anymation cycle:
FinalImage = "dynamic"

This is what is shown for our copy of the skin. Remember the logic is most likely the same but the steps might be different and the specifications might also be different. I would check again to see what files you got in the zipped skin module and go with the instructions there. One particular thing to note is that, you should check to see if the skin covers ALL parts of the customer end. Check by going into a book that allows both hard cover and soft cover, add that product into shopping cart, view the cart, and click Edit Options. This is a known bug (at least with Crystal Blue). Just make sure it's not in yours.

CSV (Comma Separated Value File Format) is where the files are seperated with a comma (or other seperator). I would recommend you use this feature to add products rather than adding products one at a time unless you have very few products. Even then it's better to keep them in a CSV or Excel spreadsheet for easier management (or use Access or some other database program and export to CSV). Follow the instructions on the Import Product page and it'll tell you how to format your CSV file.
