Hi,

I was in the process of learning PHP/MySQL so I can create a shopping cart for my website until I came across and bought Xcart GOLD.

1. Since Xcart uses smarty templates this means that I no longer have to learn PHP/MySQL , correct? It would be beneficial to me if I focused on Smarty syntax for time being?

2. Smarty templates seperate the application from the design so we as customers of xcart just need to learn the design side to fulfill our needs of a customized shopping cart system, correct?

3. With these templates can I create an admin interface for a client that only let's him change only things like product add & modify, statistics? I wouldn't want the client loggin in with capabilites to administrate (or more like screw up) everything.

4. My client has a few groups of buyers. 1 would be for regular customers (like you and me) and others would be for groups. for special groups he wants the prices of the products to change accordingly. is this possible?

I am so overwhlemed at this point, if anybody can help me grasp this, I would be very thankful.

You are totally correct in your post, and you could work with xcart to get it up and running just looking at knowing html and some smarty (for minor mods). However PHP and MYSQL knowledge will really help you understand how and why it does what it does and how you could tailor it to suit your needs.

It will also help with understanding smarty aswell

Limiting the damage that a client can do to the admin side is a good idea and can be easily achecived through removing the links to options where these things are done.

Pricing for customer groups - yep - all possible.

Just thought I'd throw this out there:

Removing the links in the admin menu works, but then you have to deal with getting to those functions yourself. One option I used was just using a special class in the stylesheet (bright red or yellow works) for those admin functions which the client should not be touching and I told them not to click those unless instructed to do so by me. Not too restrictive, but helpful to both me and the client. You could also split out those specific functions into their own menu group and label it WEBMASTER MENU or something.
