Default Displaying sales tax in shopping cart

I've read the manual, I've searched the forum, and I can't find any way to do what I want to do. When an order is being taxed, it shows up in the cart like this:

Subtotal: $17.97
Shipping: $6.36

TOTAL: $24.33

Including:
Sales Tax: $1.38

The sales tax is added to the subtotal, shipping, and total and only appears as a line item below the total. I want the sales tax to be a separate line item, so that the cart displays the untaxed subtotal, the untaxed shipping, the tax, then the total which includes tax. Is there any way to do this? I'm getting pretty good at editing the templates, but I don't know anything about php.

I want the cart to look like this:

Subtotal: $16.95
Shipping: $6.00
Sales Tax: $1.38

TOTAL: $24.33

On your main Taxing system screen, make sure these boxes are un-checked:

Display cart/order totals including tax:
Display a tax rate for each product in cart/order:

If I do that, then it doesn't charge tax at all.

Sounds like your forumulas are not set correctly. In both the main tax method, and the rate, you should only have ST in the 'Apply to' box. No other boxes should be checked on the rate or the method.

*sigh* I see now what happened. I thought I had set the tax zone for all products, but I have too many products to select them all at once so it was only applied to some of them. The product in my cart while I was testing just happens to be one that doesn't have it applied, and I didn't realize it because it just isn't obvious when a tax is selected if you only have one tax rate showing.

Thank you for your help.

Not sure if this will help, but it may as it appears you are new to x-cart...
In Admin, Appearance Options, you can set:
Products per page (admin):
make this something like 999999

and then all the products will appear in one go, allowing you to select all and then make a change to 1 that applies to all.

I've got it set to 9999, and I've got 1800+ products, but it still didn't get all of them for some reason. That's OK, though. Now that I know about it, I updated my local product file generating software to include the tax information and re-uploaded all my products. Problem solved!
