I like the filter module, but how can I get rid of the Manufcturer section?

Do you need the Manufacturer field? Or would you like to get rid of it comletely?

I've been looking how to enable the Manufacturer field so we can sort products by manufacturer, but it does not appear normally, how do we enable it?

The "Manufacturer" field is just a regular "global" product attribute.

You can edit global attributes:
a) "Catalog" -> "Classes & attributes" page -> "Edit attributes" link next to "Global attributes" entry.
- or -
b) "Catalog" -> edit a product -> "Attributes" tab -> "Global" subtab -> "Global attributes" section

Just remove/add the field in any of the above ways.

The class attribute in 5.x turns that into a variant, where as the manufacturer option of 4.x would group all items designated by that manufacturer when searched on in the admin area.

That is what I am looking for more than something that is treated as a variant on the customer end of things. Is that available?

Attributes in X-Cart 5 are like a mix of the following XC4 features: extra fields, options and variants.

By default an attribute is a "plain extra field" (in terms of XC4). You can make it an option that a customer has to choose when adding the product to cart. And you can turn a group of selected options into product variants.

Unfortunately, there is no way to search products by attributes in the back-end yet.
