How to add template var with skin1.conf

Default How to add template var with skin1.conf
We created a new x-cart template but we want to add some template specific variables.
Reading some documentation we found out it should be possible to add vars to the skin1.conf file in the template folder. We could refer to them as {#var#}.

My question is: Does each template have it's own skin1.conf or can we only add variables to the skin1.conf in the common_files folder?
