Hi,

Cant get this thing to work properly!

Sale we try to implement:
We have product A, if customer buys 10, we offer 1 free.

I selected the sale # 4: Buy X items / Get Z items free or discounted

Selected the date, then the categories of products where sale is applicable, selected 10.
Next we chose the same category for the free give away etc..

Then onto the website, to test try it.
If I select 10, nothing happens.
If I select 11 then the free one appears.

All nice, but we want people to be able to select 10 units, not 11!
Reason being, we use discounts where 10 is our lowest price...

Surely it cant be that hard to get this thing working right??

A buy 10 get 1 discounted will require the customer to purchase 10 at regular price, and the 11th will be discounted. (10 + 1 = 11)

Sounds like you want a buy 9 get 1 discounted. This will discount the 10th product in the cart.

We want the customers to select 10 in the product page and get the 11th free of charge when they get in the cart.

in the onsale settings you can select the add free products to cart automatically, which will add the 11th to the cart for you,

Ah, OK, you need a different sale:
Buy X Items Get Product Y Free/Discounted

With this one you specify which product they get free.

With the one ou chose, the customer can select a product from a category, so it won't get auto added to the cart as it doesn't know which product the customer wants.

Here is the example here:
We sell batteries, there 4 different types, say A,B, C and D.
Customers typically buy 10 of the same type, say 10 batteries A.

We want them to get an eleventh one for free.

Now if I use that other sale you suggested, I have a problem because I select X items from a category or subcategory, so basically it would be from the Batteries category.
Then I would need to select Product Y.
But if customer by say 11 battery A he needs to get one free battery A, not a B nor a C...

Alternative would be to create 4 different sales...

Don't know if it's me but I find On Sale very unusable, we had some issues with another type of sale that are still not resolved..

I think for what you need you need 4 different sales, as you want to specify the free product for each option, or you could create a new product called Free Battery, set it to hidden but available for sale, and select that as your free product. Then you can just pick the right one when you pick and ship the order.

I've found onsale very good, it can take a bit of getting your head around, and depends on your products and what kind of offers you want to do I suppose.

Since the sale you setup has an entire category of products that can potentially be free, there will not be anything auto-added. Only sales where you specify an exact product that the customer will get discounted will auto-add products.

These are sales that end in 'Get Product Y Free/Discounted'.

Got it working now indeed.
Just a pity that we need to create as many sales as there are products... source of errors at the time of creation but also at the time of cancellation me thinks..
