I am trying to display the short description in a 2-column product list. When I change this from 1 column display to 2 or 3 columns the short description goes away.

I want to replace the link for "See Details" for the short description. "See Details" link is in products_t.tpl.

<a href="product.php?productid={$products[product].productid}&amp;cat={$cat}&amp;page={$navigation_page}">{$lng.lbl_see_details}</a>

However, if I substitute
{$lng.lbl_see_details} with {$product.productdescr}
nothing shows.

How can I pick up the value of this correctly?

The value you are using is incorrect - you need something like this:

{$products[product].descr|truncate:300:"...":true}
