Hi,

My x-cart is exposed to people spamming the site via contact us. Is there a way to stop this e.g via number/letter authentication.

This has also happened to me. I was wondering if I can make username a required field?

Well you probably could, but you really don't want to do that. Many people who aren't registered may want to contact you with a question about a product.
