Default 4 vs 5?

Hallo!

I've used X-Cart 4 previously, but haven't been around it since around 4.2!

I have a new site to build & I'd like to use X-Cart to do it.

I'm not sure whether to use v4 or v5 to do so.

I was very familiar with the structure, workings & customisation of v4.2 but how different is 4.7?

As this is a new site, I'm looking for longevity initially, but the ability to customise down the line is also important.

I've read that there's currently more people 'supporting' & developing for v4, but I wonder how long it will continue to be that way. I don't want to opt for v4 if v5 is soon to take over.

Any advice very welcome!

This will depend on how you look at the overall picture.
XC4 is still in development and QT promised it will be for as long as there is demand for it.
On the other hand XC5 is their main platform now and it is taking over XC4. Slowly but it is.
If you are familiar with XC4 and want to make cart changes yourself you are better off sticking with XC4. 4.7.x is different than 4.2.x but in terms of platform and templates it is the same.
XC5 is completely different platform and whatever you know for XC4 is useless in XC5.

I personally would choose XC5 for new store and if the store does not require way too much customization form stock cart. Otherwise XC4 is better choice.

Thanks, Steve!

The store won't require huge customisation - not like my previous projects with 4.2.3. My client would eventually like to explore offers/email marketing etc, but I presume there will be modules available that can take care of this.

Really appreciate your input. I am tempted by X-Cart 5, but I will have to do some digging and familiarise myself with it. However, it's for a small business who wouldn't want to re-invest in such a major upgrade down the line, so I think you're right in going for v5.

X-Cart 5 is vastly superior to X-Cart 4 Classic at this current time. If you want to be able to have a new site with enterprise level modules and coding, I suggest that you get X-Cart 5. Try it out first by uploading on your site to get a feel for it. After testing it out, you can use your X-Cart 4 license to sign up and get a discounted upgrade to X-Cart 5.

To be honest, after you learn how to tweak the css code using theme tweaker you are pretty much off to the races; however, I do suggest that you purchase a template from X-Cart as making one from scratch can be a little daunting. God bless you!

Thanks Iseals!

I'm really happy with template development, so I'm not too daunted by that at all. My two 4.2.3 sites were hugely customised - call me crazy, but I really enjoy the process!

I think I'll do exactly what you suggested and go for X-Cart 5 and see how we go!

Thanks so much!

Here goes
