New York,

you need to obtain the special licence key in this case and enter this information, there is another thread which is at the top of the correct forum you are talking about. Upgrading X-cart. Please check the forum and post in the correct thread/forum. This thread is discussing if anyone is using for a live store.

Hi @New York!

Basically, RichieRich suggested a solution. If you did not receive a license key for Mobile module, please contact us at sales@x-cart.com.

Tony.

Hello,

Simple upgrade from 5 to 5.1.2 did not worked,
I wiped all out and install fresh 5.1.2.
At least store did not lock itself like after upgrade. But none of the activated/active module show setting.
I understand not all should have setting in module view but none at all have this option my test site. compare to your screenshots in manual, and your Demo store.

Hi!

Could you please let me know what problem you faced with upgrade? Did you get any error?

As for module settings problem, could you please let me know whether you have any error messages in the <X-Cart 5>/var/log folder? Besides that, could you please send a snapshot of the Webmaster Kit module in the Installed Modules section in your admin area? It has settings out of the box.

Thank you.

Tony.

Default Re: Anybody using v5 for a live store yet?

I was going to start a new thread, but this thread seems to have morphed into something bigger than it was originally and I think my questions are related.

I have been running a 4.x store for several years (4.1.8 with upgrades/patches for PHP 5.3 compatibility). I have also purchased the Mobile mod for XCart 4.x.

Every time I try to upgrade my store to the latest version, I get sidetracked with various issues (e.g., bugs, my own time constraints) and can't seem to bring it to the point of going live.

I am wishing to make yet another attempt at an upgrade, but I feel like I shouldn't waste time trying to make a 4.x store work when version 5 is ready. So I am hoping for some helpful info and advice as to what I should do.

I know I can exchange my 4.x license for a discounted V5 license. Does this give me access to all the V5 files just like I currently have access to my 4.x files? Is it possible to keep my 4.x store running live while I set up and test a V5 store, and then officially turn in my 4.x license when I have the V5 store ready to go? I realize the V5 store will likely have some sort of "demo" message until I can input license info.

V5 does not include mobile capabilities on its own, correct? Is it possible to get a discount on the Mobile skin by "trading in" the 4.x Mobile mod I purchased? If not, are users having good luck with the built-in responsive design in version 5 to adequately handle their mobile traffic?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello!

Sure you can keep using your existing X-Cart 4 store while developing your new one after purchasing the license exchange. Just mention that you would like to do so and the responsible specialist will make the necessary adjustments.

As for access to files, you can download the 30-day free trial of the Business package straight from our website without any purchases. Of course, you are not allowed to remove the evaluation notices during the trial. However you can activate the Free package any time with this installation. This will just disable the modules that are only included in the Business package. The rest of the data will stay untouched thanks to the modular structure of X-Cart 5.
So after activating the Free pack you can definitely remove all the evaluation notices and keep customizing the store. After you exchange the license you will just need to enter the license key straight in the backend of the store and install any additional modules from the built-in marketplace.

We currently do not have any special promotions for those who own certain module for X-Cart 4 and wish to purchase it's successor for X-Cart 5. And speaking about responsive design it all depends on your point of view. Some people I talk to want to have a dedicated template for mobile devices, others insist on have one skin for everything just making it adaptive. And I would say the ratio would be 45/45%, the rest 10% being those who want to have both.

In my opinion the big question is what your customers are using while browsing your store. Because if they mostly use larger screens of various resolutions then a responsive template would be a better choice. And for smartphones a dedicated skin would be more convenient, at least from my point of view.
If you haven't done such a research Google Analytics should definitely help you out.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer. I have downloaded V5 and will likely install it during the next few days. I will probably explore it a bit before I exchange my license. I think I can live with the evaluation notices for awhile as I customize, etc.

Once I do the license exchange, will there be a time limit for me to get the V5 store live in order to close my current 4.1.8 store?

Thanks again.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, I don't think V5 will work for me at this time. I have certain modules in my current 4.1.8 store that I rely on, and they're not included in V5. I use Special Offers to give my customers points. BCSE has a mod for giving points, and they have created a version for V5, but it means shelling out another $200. I also use the Manufacturers module in 4.1.8, as well as a similar Authors/Artists module I created myself by modeling it after the Manufacturers module. I like to link products together by their maker and/or author/artist, similar to the way Amazon does (e.g., view a book on Amazon and you can click on the author name to see other books by that author; I have the same functionality in my store and don't want to lose it).

Most important, I use BCSE's Shipping per Product module. I sell lots of books and CDs that are shippable via USPS Media Mail. However, I do sell non-media items as well, and I need a way to prevent Media Mail from being offered as a shipping option when a customer has a non-media item in his/her cart. BCSE does not yet make this module for V5. My only (simple) alternative at this point would be to disable Media Mail completely, and I don't want to take this inexpensive method away from my customers who order only eligible media items.

I expect more modules will be created for V5 as time goes on, so I will hold off on exchanging my V4 license for now. Thanks again for answering my V5 questions.

As for reward points and manufacturers - these features are available for X-Cart 5 as extensions created by our developers:

jillsybte,

Unless you can use v5 without any modifications over than updating logo, you may want to consider 4.6.
so far, v5 was the biggest disappointment we had with x-cart in over 10 years.
just some examples: we purchased 2 skins advertised as "ready to use" skins for v5 on x-cart.com - took around 4 weeks to get them; they looked like crap - not at all like screenshots advertised on the site. took another 2 weeks to get them modified to look at least remotely similar.
we ordered one customization for v5 from x-cart - took 4 weeks with some delay to get it (same customization we can do in a day in any v4) and now we are trying to test it for another 3 weeks because we are constantly getting errors in that test store.
we had to scrap one v5 project and start all over because cache generation stopped working after unsuccessful upgrade and problem did not appear right away and we noticed only after the oldest backup had the same problem.
it was one disaster after another.
i'm pissed and disappointed and it seems like x-cart support knows very little about v5. simple problem with mail formatting on Mac computers took 2 months to resolve.
i like x-cart guys and wish them all the best but looks like they are digging their own grave with this v5.

... we've got another 5 tickets today with problems from a client who is trying to use v5 for a semi-live store so I'm not the proudest user. maybe somebody had a better luck.

Yes XC4 is the way to go "Unless you can use v5 without any modifications over than updating logo"
