Default Magento vs. X-cart

Hi Guys,

I am going to open a new store. I currently using X-cart but would like to have an open option. I looked around and found Magento as a possible alternative.

What are the pros and cons of using Magento vs. X-cart?

Thanks,
Mike

X-Cart is faster and less resource consuming, can handle more SKUs on the same server. PA-DSS compliance is possible for X-Cart without having to pay $12,000 a year. Someone says X-Cart code and template system is better than Magento's. But let's someone else to comment on that. I coded neither for X-Cart nor for Magento.

As for features - please tell what you need to have.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate that. I see that Magento charge a ridiculous amount of money per year. That's a lot for small biz. I believe a lot of their users are using the free version for their e-commerce (that come without commercial license). Why would they let that goes?

As for features:
1. easy to follow url like --> www.mysite.com/category1/subcat/productname.html

2. 1 page check out
3. canonical url supported
4. FB Tab module (I'm using it on my current site).
5. FB Like, Twitter count etc.
6. automatically link 1 product to the next/prev within the same category using product name (just like websitecm Next/Prev items module).
7. CDSEO Pro feature (again from websitecm.com)
8. Buy Together (like the one from alteredcart.com)
9. robust email marketing platform (I am using Aweber but don't like their double opt-in for I can't import my buyers into their system without getting a confirmation from the buyers).
10. possibly an automated hyperlink from one category to the next as well as an easy way to change anchor text on those links

I am more than likely going to use X-cart for my next store with all of the above feature. They work great. However, I really like to have no.1 feature which is not on my current site.

Thanks,
Mike

Alex,

I forgot 1 feature the ability to show multiple images for 1 product (different color, angles) and maybe 360 degree view.

Thanks,
Mike

Such feature has been in X-Cart for several years already. See "Clean URLs"

> 2. 1 page check out

X-Cart 4.4.x comes with one page checkout.

Use canonical URLs for storefront pages: This option helps to improve the standing of every single storefront page with Google, Yahoo! and other search engines by clearing up returned search results for the store.

This is an X-Cart module - http://www.x-cart.com/facebook_tab.html
And it is on sale now - see the page.

> 5. FB Like, Twitter count etc.

That's extremely easy to embed into X-Cart templates. Just download Facebook Like/Twitter count code and enter it into proper place of X-Cart template.

X-Cart doesn't have this feature out of the box, but why just not to keep using WebciteCM's Next/Prev module?

These and many others are available at http://marketplace.x-cart.com/addons-modules/

Not sure I got this right. Could you please describe a bit more? Do you need something like a category rotator?

According to your signature you are using X-Cart 4.1.x which is a quite old version and doesn't have many of the features you are looking for. X-Cart 4.4.3 with all latest features and full source code can be downloaded at http://www.x-cart.com/download.html any time.

Alex,

Thank you very much for your detailed input. I've been waiting to upgrade my store for sometimes. After reading a few threads on this forum, I've decided to hold of on upgrading (quite a lot of suggestion to wait for the 5.0 version). I will eventually do that when it become available.

My list of mod just expanded. Alex, you're the man and thanks for the heads up!

Sincerely,
Mike Chudej

If you're not experienced with coding and have a limited budget, use the longest pole you can find to keep Magento away. Customizing the look of magento is much more complex than X-cart. What could be a weeks worth in X-cart would easily scale to be 3-4 weeks in Magento.

All your features required can be added by either premade modules (cdseo, OPC from alteredcart) or quickly added in if not made as wanted (fb, twitter etc)

I run stores in x-cart and Magento.

In my experience x-cart is simpler, quicker and easier to understand than Magento.

However, Magento has much more potential, especially now it is owned by ebay. I believe that gives Magento more resources than any other shopping cart provider, certainly at this end of the market.

The sheer volume and velocity of community modules created for Magento is staggering (although there not all great contributions).

Doesn't matter in the end unless you want to shell out $11k to be PA-DSS compliant, you can't use it. Perhaps eBay's money will get a certification for the lower end versions.
