Default Module not being detected

I am trying to install a module called x-special offers. The module said to add the file into the xcart directory then run the installation from the browser. well when i try to put in the browser directory to where the installation file is at, xcart says it can not find it. So I tried to add the xcart module into the xcart module folder

skin1/modules/

when I try to go into the admin page, I dont see it anywhere. im not sure where to start. what is the normal routine for installing a module.

The mistake I make almost all the time is I forget to clear my cache. Run "http://www.yoursitehere/cleanup.php" and see if that helps.

nope, that didnt seem to be the issue. Is it possible to install it manually or do i have to go through the installation file. the module told me to put the Module folder into the xcart folder. then run the installation file that is in that folder from the browser. only problem is that xcart doesnt allow you to call files from within a folder like below

http://www.mywebsite.com/moduleFolder/installation.php

only way i could get it to work is to pull the installation.php out of the moduleFolder and put it on the root. it then detects the file but can not install the rest because installation file is not in its proper place (folder). does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong.

no, no, no.

let's try again.

1. please put your xcart version into your forum signature:

http://forum.x-cart.com/profile.php?do=editsignature

2a. Xcart does not know where your "store root" is, and by default makes an /xcart/ directory. This is only for initial installation -- you should really move your store to root, but that is beyond the scope of this post -- there are countless threads about moving your store to root.

2b. Now that you know where your store root is, when xcart says to "add the file into the xcart directory" -- it is wherever your store is installed. This is the same directory as config.php

Got it now?

thats what I did. I put the module on the root of where my xcart is installed.

xcart
--catalog
--customer
--skin1
--mymodule

where all the folders are above, thats where my module sits.

www.mywebsite.com/mymodule/installation.php

It says xcart cant find it.

I assumed that the permissions are set to writable because otherwise I wouldnt be able to upload it. permissions is set to 755 so I am able to write to the xcart root folder.

But can you write to the files in the x-so directory?

Don't assume anything.
Follow the instructions to the letter.

Let's assume that you're a real smart web guru. Now the bad news: xcart doesn't care! Xcart does it its own way -- and if you don't RTFM, #FAIL.

Try again?
