Is there a way to show an "Item of the month" on the home page?

You could use the Featured Products module for this and just change it to say 'Item of the Month'

Ok, but does featured products only apply when in a category? Because this would need to be displayed before i got to a category. Thanks.

Click on 'Categories'. The featured products you add on that screen show up on the home page.

The firetank featured product manager works seperately to x-carts featured products so it's not tied into the categories.

You can do all sorts of things with it, it's very flexible, take a look here:

It also doesn't require you to modify your x-cart install or PHP pages so it's very upgrade and developer friendly!
