Default Internal search field for products

Hi there

Is there an 'internal search' field for products in 5.x as there was 4.x?

As I recall, I could add a term to this field in the products I was interested in, go to the customer side and enter that term in the search box, and the resulting page (containing those products) had a link to show the full search url. That url could be copied, and then used in blog posts, emails, etc.

My explanation and terminology might be slighly off, but generally speaking, that was the process I followed.

Does a similar facility exist in 5.x? I used to do it all the time in 4.x and would like to do the same now.

Many thanks

Welly

Replace "sneakers" with your search term.
Also check the "more search options" link for other options that can be included in the url

That does work, Steve, many thanks, but I don't necessarily want the search term to be visible in the product name, description, SKU, or tag. I would prefer to put it somewhere in the background, as I did in 4.x.

I'm guessing that isn't possible?

The XC4 search url is similar and still expose the search term

https://demo.x-cart.com/demo/search.php?mode=search&by_title=Y&by_descr=Y&by_sk u=Y&search_in_subcategori...y_shortdescr=Y

You can see it in the above url - substring=variant

There is no way to have the search url without the search term - what are you searching for then?

That wasn't quite what I meant, and I'm not searching for anything controversial

I usually choose terms that a customer wouldn't use by accident, and in this case, it is 'nighttoys' as I want to search for specific dog toys that can be used in low light.

I don't mind the search term being in the URL, but I don't want to use the term 'nighttoys' in a tag or anywhere else on the details of the page, as it is pretty meaningless in itself. I could probably choose something that isn't meaningless and make it part of the product text(s), but it seems like an overcomplication compared to the perfectly acceptable method used in 4.x.

However, now it seems that I don't need to do anything extra.

When I was fiddling with this yesterday, I added that term to the meta keywords field in my products. At the time, it didn't work and when I searched for it I didn't get any results. Today, it works.

I use Cloudsearch, which updates every eight hours, so I think in between adding the keywords and this morning, the index updated to include my keyword.

I have another one to do today, so I'll see if I get the same result.

Many thanks for your input, Steve.

UPDATE: Resyncing the Cloudsearch index does work. I just tried with a different selection of products, resynced, and searching on my chosen term does display them.

Ok so what you think is "internal search" in XC4 it is actually the meta keywords text. Always been. I think QT had this wrongly worded from the very beginning.
Meta keywords are also unless nowdays as all SE dropped any use of them.
You can still use this field for your own purposes of course as long as it suits you...

Not quite.

There was a META Keywords field in 4.x and there still is in 5.x even though it may be mostly redundant now, but in 4.x there was another field called 'Search Keywords'. It is this latter field that I was using, but it no longer exists.

However, as you say, the META Keywords field can be used as I see fit, and it does seem to achieve what I want.
