json is recommended, but other formats will still work for 5 years or so at least https://schema.org

They will not and SE will continue to support them. However it is more complicated to integrate them and code has to be placed in certain places within the html, template modifications, etc..
JSON-LD is way easier, all info is in one place, easy to find and follow and can be placed anywhere in the page source.

I can't tell you how good the module works in terms of results. It does provide the info Google needs. It is a different question if Google shows this info or not, when and how. But it does work for me and starts showing results

Google started with JSON-LD some time ago, I believe like 2 years ago. It was for events and recipes at first but now they are moving to it for all structured data.

Anyway - it is another way to go to about rich snippets and I believe sooner than later this will be not just the recommended but the preferred format to use and play bigger roll.

Yep, doing good.. I'm also testing, I think the BreadcrumbList is one of the crucial ones, and json or not, it has the same desired effect.
