No, it doesn't slow it down. The Cloud Search in X-Cart 5.2.6 is implemented so, that it does not affect the TTFB parameter at all.
And does it influence the TTFB for Xcart4?

Actually, it doesn't affect it in v.4 either=)

Sorry for confusing you. I asked Maxim, the engineer I consulted with, why he specified the version (X-Cart 5) for our previous reply, if the answer does not depend on the X-Cart version, he said, "because the question was about that version, according to the signature". Well, some tech people love being especially precise=)

Exactly

I asked because our TTFB is actually quite high, we moved to a brand new server (VPS) which is blazingly fast and our TTFB is still quite high in my opinion.

Well, I did a couple of tests:
http://www.webpagetest.org/result/151030_YG_NMY/
http://www.webpagetest.org/result/151030_ZX_NM8/

Though 0.2-0.3 sec (like for a static content) would probably be ideal, 0.5 and 0.6 seconds for a home and category page(dynamic ones!) seem quite good. Am I looking at a right website?

Anyway, let's avoid off-topic in this thread about Cloud Search: I asked out engineers to get in touch with you via HelpDesk, probably they will be able to suggest some improvements within website speedup and optimization services we offer.
