I installed the new 4.3.2 on my test VirtualBox (php 5.3.2; MySQL 5.1.41; Apache 2.2.14; 512 memory) along with all the modules that now come with xcart - no issues at all with the installation. Everything seems to run just fine right out of the box. Cart seems to be working very fast with the demo products. Of course keep in mind all trafic goes through the internal network only. One thing that has to be improved - now with all this modules that come for free with the cart (7 modules) it is not necessary to keep them as a separate installations. QT - make them part of the xcart default install with on/off switch during install. It's a waste of time and resources to install them one by one

I could not agree with Steve more on this, but I am afraid it is a mute point as this is the end of the 4.3 branch and 4.4 should have it all included. Regardless QT did a pretty quick job of getting the bugs worked out on the 4.3 branch. We are quite happy with this version and what it has allowed us to accomplish.

That's another improvement I would like to see - to be able to turn on/off modules during install and not only in cart admin. Lets say I don't need affiliate module and won't need it ever. Instead of installing it and turning it off in admin (which still keeps all the if statements in templates and php files, bloating them a lot) why not just not install it in the first place and not having all the "if module install" code. There has to be a way. Anyway - I personally see big improvement in latest version and hope 4.4 to be a big step towards v5

All the modules in question are part of the default install in X-Cart 4.4, so they are all installed during the default cart installation.

However, you can not switch them on/off during install, unfortunately. All the modules are ON by default.

Anyway, feel free to post your idea at ideas.x-cart.com, we will take it into consideration, surely!

Hi Sergey,

I have a 4.0.18 store but want to upgrade... If I set up a fresh 4.4 install will I still be able to pay you guys to migrate my data (about 1000 products and 10,000 orders) from 4.0.18 to 4.4? Any issues there? Or should I move to 4.3.2 first?? I don't want to wait too long, but I also don't want to move to something (4.3.2) that will be obsolete soon (and I'm looking ahead to v5 of course and the migration path to that from 4.3.2 or 4.4 ...).

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

I'm just another X-cart user - Sergey and others have final say-so. But, I've skipped X-cart versions as well and I've been able to upgrade via a fresh install of the latest version and Qualteam has upgraded my DB for me. I suspect that this would be your upgrade path as well.

I would absolutely suggest that your host provider make a backup copy of your DB before you let Qualteam touch it. Example: I installed a copy of my previous cart (old version) on my server in another folder, and moved my old DB to that installation as a backup. This isn't public-facing, no one has access to this cart but me - but it's a working backup, just in case.

Finally, I do not plan to touch V5 for at least 6 to 12 months AFTER it is released. It's sorta like buying a new car in it's first production year; wait until the product has been refined a bit before using it.

Thanks for the info! But regarding the DB: I was assuming that to proceed with a fresh install I'd need a fresh DB, and only when it's all set up and customized would I then have Qualiteam would *migrate* the data, and NOT "upgrade" my old DB. Do you know if they move data from old DB to new, or do they actually change old DB structure to be compatible with new installation? Seems that an upgrade would not really work since a new install could also have new mods installed which would require DB changes which would then not be back-ported...

Thanks again,

Paul

Paul,

The installation of your database would include both the upgrade and migration. Everything would be handled by Qualiteam; they will upgrade your old database and move it to the new installation. That's what they did for me.

The data is part of the database, that's where your orders and product information is stored, as well as your product images - unless you used your file system for storage instead. If that's the case, one of the other more learned forum participants may be able to give you tips on moving your product pics.

Any mods you have installed on your cart should be shared with Qualiteam before getting started. They would need this info to plan their work. (Most of the mods that have interested me didn't affect the database, just the cart itself. Your mods may have nothing to do with your database.) I've used few 3rd party mods; I ran my cart "stock" much of the time, so I never worried about database problems during upgrades.

I hope this helps.

Edit: After re-reading your post and my answer, I think I misunderstood some of your concerns: I believe Qualiteam upgrades your old database for use in the new X-cart installation. Even if I'm wrong on that, it doesn't matter - -let Qualiteam at it and they'll get it done either way. If the mods you're referring to are part of the cart (new features of the newer version) and not 3rd party, don't worry about it. This will be covered with the upgrade.

Once again, this has been my experience.
