Default Xcart 4 vs 5

Have been using 4 for over a decade. Time to upgrade the cart. The question is 4 or 5. My version is about 5 years old. We have a fairly sophisticated site.

Developers - take a look. We are looking to decide which one and we need a developer with EXPERIENCE.

Actually, you need to check what addons/modules you have implemented on your site and which modules exist for x-cart 5 with similar functionality. Even if all such modules exist in x-cart 5, you will need to purchase and install them from scratch, since x-cart 5 is a completely different platform, in terms of code, from x-cart 4.

X-Cart 4 has been having a long history of module support for a wide range of additional functionality, whereas xcart 5 development is fresh, in comparison.

Also, any customizations you have implemented in the code or skin, must be re-created for x-cart 5.

You can view an initial comparison between the two x-cart platforms, here

Everything that @vasilis has said plus:

Research your own comparisons too. X-Cart's own (the link provided by @vasilis) is one perspective but you want end user perspectives too - that's vital. FWIW Upgrades tend to not always be straight forward on both - dependent on the amount of changes you have made from a stock release

Speed XC4 v XC5 - Look on this forum, plenty of information already posted about this. Things are already changing with XC5.3.* but that's only at beta stage right now and it will be a a little while before that's ready to go fully live.

Migrations from your existing store - in either direction

We have a simple store and prefer XC5, but it's been a path that's required patience... so far

Steven,

I think you will be much happier with X-cart 4 knowing your business. X-cart 5 is just too new and not as rooted as you need. It's not even X-cart, it should have it's own name. It's a completely new platform.

Feel free to drop us an email and we can advise and quote upgrading you.

Thanks,

Carrie

We are also LONG time users of X-Cart, for about 15 years now.
I don't know what version of X-Cart 4 you are using, but even within X-Cart 4, there are MANY improvements.
It is most definitely worth it to upgrade to the latest 4.7.6 if you are on an older version, for example 4.1/4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5/4.6.

4.7 is MUCH faster than older version, much more functionality, better optimised for speed and mobile devices etc.
Get a quote from BCSE for example what it would cost to migrate to the latest X-Cart 4 version (as of writing 4.7.6).
Try out the demo of the latest X-Cart, you'll probably see a lot of new functionality. It's worth it to stay with X-Cart 4 & just upgrade to the latest version. A company like BCSE can give you the best advice on that and probably show you the differences.

We are very happy since we switched from an 'old' X-Cart 4.4 to a fresh X-Cart 4.6 a few years ago, and we have updated to the latest update within a month of release ever since we did that upgrade. We are very happy with the updated functionality with every release and we are not thinking of switching to X-Cart 5 since 4.7 is so much faster & better than older versions.
