Default Is there a limit to the number of product variants?

I am trying to add a number of product variants for a particular product. Each time I add the variant options x-cart goes through the process of rebuilding the variants, which takes a bit longer with each option group I add. After adding the fourth option group it seems to get hung up on the rebuilding variant stage.
Is there a limit to how many variants can be added for a product?
I'm running an older version of x-cart. version 4.3.2
Thanks!

Question Re: Is there a limit to the number of product variants?

I have the almost the same question. I plan to add variants for the first time. But, my situation is different only in that I will be adding only about 2 or 3 variants per product, for about 20 or 30 products in total. Currently my store has 500 products but will soon have 2000. Will those variants slow my cart down at all?

I think from this post that I will be fine: http://forum.x-cart.com/showthread.php?t=58561

Mysticearth, Alex said ~10 was too many variants per product. 4 is ok. Perhaps you should specify how many products that you'll add, and how many variants per product. We both could then use the answer.

Default Re: Is there a limit to the number of product variants?

I stayed away from using variants because of what the xcart manual said "Please use product variants only if you need to be able to specify quantity in stock, SKU and weight separately for each product variation. In all other cases, using product options is recommended"

However - I now want to update all my product prices and it seems because I have set up my products using product options / price modifier (as recommended) , I wont be able to do a global price increase of certain category products - so I'm screwed unless I can convert product options / price modifier into variants (and retain the price structure)

Default Re: Is there a limit to the number of product variants?

This is an oldish thread, but I will give my 2cents if it helps.

With X-cart, everything is relative. "Too many" is strictly a function of what you are hosted on and if you have done any improvements.

I would not think that 20 variants with only 2 options each would be worse than 4 variants with 100 options each. So once again, it is all relative. Keep in mind, as you add variants, the number of total combinations increases exponentially.

In my case, I try to keep my variants per product to 2 or 3.

Anything beyond that and start a new product.

Hope it helps.
