Default Your Icon in Browser navigation bar

Hi All

Do you like people to see your small icon in the browser navigation window and for any links that they save?
It took me a long time to find out howБ─╕. The Internet is an excellent source of information, you only need to search with the right questions and be patient. I call the web (www) the World Wide Webster - itБ─≥s another TLA (Three Letter Acronym) Б─⌠ we have too many in engineering.

To make life easier for you, here is the executive summary how to:

You need to make a icon file suitable for windows. It must be 16 pixels by 16 pixels and 256 colour. It must be called Б─°favicon.icoБ─² without the quotation marks and you put it in the root directory of your site.
Eg: http://www.mysite.com/favicon.ico

The Browsers will find it and use it automatically.

I recommend Б─°ICONFORGEБ─² by http://www.cursorarts.com/ for creating your business icon.

Regards

Adding that little file to your root directory will also help eliminate the errors in your logs when the browsers are searching for that file and can't find it :) One annoyance however - IE seems to 'lose' the icon after a while, as it is stored in a temporary directory. The customer would have to re-bookmark the site to get it back in their favorites.

Default Your Icon in saved web links

Hi All

I left this information out in the first post - I needed to verify it before posting:

************************************************** ********
To have your icon saved with the links, you need to put the following line in the home.tpl file in your Б─°/myshop/schemes/templates/2-columns/customer/home.tplБ─² file (or 2-columns_reversed, 3-columns_reversed, small_shop directory):
Б─°<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/favicon.ico">Б─² without the outside quotes just before the Б─°</HEAD>Б─² line.
This will embed the icon link into the header of each page.
************************************************** ********

Yes the links are only refreshed when visiting (Mozilla also loses it until you visit the site), however it then stays for the session (I automatically clear my temp directories every time I re-boot).

Iconforge is also free for the 30 days - so you can make your icon in that time and still be legal . When your business gets going, and you want (and can afford) to change the look, then you can buy it.

I wish you all the best with your internet shops.

Regards
Ing. Stephen Hatton.
