Its an XCN demo site with Drupal. It's appears rapid here in England but that means nothing

Not that fast on first load, actually I would say it was slow. It may be due to all the security at the gates - it travels internationally after all

Yes I forgot that I'd reintalled it when I posted that link last night.

There is also an option to compress the output within Drupal.

The Cache control seems to make some difference in Drupal if you have some Drupal blocks inserted.

I'm sure there is a ton of stuff you could do to chop the page size down.

Will it be possible to upgrade an LC3/ Drupal to X-cart Next? though so far I cannot see any difference between the two versions.

There really isn't a substantial difference as of now. This is just a branding change more that anything. XCN is the paid version of LC. I don't know of a current way to upgrade, but I am certain that this is a high priority on QT's to-do list. Thousands of LC users will probably need/want to convert.

It's probably too soon to worry about converting or upgrading, let XCN mature and see what comes of it is my advice.

I am looking at upgrading our carts next year and starting fresh. I am hoping to stay with X-Cart (better the devil you know!) but I need to know that X-Cart Next is definitely the way forward as opposed to 4.5.x?

Also, why is it called X-Cart Next when you can get it now and is therefor not the "next" version? What's the "next" version after that going to be called....X-Cart Tomorrow (available today!)??

I myself wrestle with this from time to time. We have a conundrum. The fact is that XC's feature set is still improving and expanding faster than XCN. Comparing the two, is like comparing a pumpkin (XC), to an apple (XCN).

Currently, developing in XCN for me is like wading through molasses, my skill set with XC is extremely high, but I am an XCN noob. And when I consider the features extensions and modules of XC and consider developing those for XCN, I know that I will not be able to accomplish that in a reasonable amount of time.

Will this change? Maybe. Perhaps I am the one that needs to change, or perhaps XCN just needs to "grow up" a little. But as we all know the e-commerce industry is rapidly changing and expanding, our visitors demand more and more and they vote with their dollars. Keeping on the forefront with a product like XC, still takes a lot of work and development. Keeping up with the Jones's on XCN, is extremely daunting.

The name is designed to link the two packages, and encourage XC owners to move to the new platform. I actually think the name is on point. XC has such a legacy, that to abandon the name would be foolish. However you cannot call this XC5, because it isn't, it's completely new code from scratch. What would you call it?

QT is putting their eggs in this basket, and eventually we will need to do the same. I am still waiting for the scales to tip. I do recommend you getting a copy of the soft, and testing it out to see if it meets your needs. I have invested quite a bit of time in learning and working with Xcart Next, but I still don't have any live sites or clients using it.

Thanks Totaltec,

We have been looking at Magento Go and I feel that is going to be a major headache and re-learning but X-Cart Next is looking equally as alien now! XC feature set will stop growing now I guess, and I'm guessing XCN will catch up but I need it to have caught up pretty soon before we commit!

X-Cart Next is like calling it X-Cart Beta and the name never changing even when it's been officially released. You asked what I would call it, maybe "X-Cart ?!"

Dan

That's funny I like it

The truth if you ask me is that XCN is in the works but will not be ready for prime time in 2013. There is LC which is build on the same platform as XCN and is live but still lacks way too many XC features. XCN is growing in features but very slow. Personally I wouldn't recommend replacing XC with Magento and wouldn't recommend starting real project on XCN now as it is not ready. If you need to upgrade an old store use XC 4.5.x - this platform will be around for another 2 years at least even if XCN is released in 2013.

To your more general question - yes XCN is the new way and the way to go just not now. XCN is completely different platform and has a lot of potential but still in beta, still buggy and still can't compare to XC 4.5.x as far as features and support goes
