Default eBay just bought Magento

I see that eBay had just bought Magento, I wonder that means both for the future versions of Magento and for the whole eCommerce / eBay arena. Anyone have an opinion ?
I wonder if Magento will now become soley a shopping cart program to be used with eBay only?

Maybe they'll actually put some money into cleaning up that mess and made a decent cart out of it.

If they get rid of that EAV nonsense they decided was a jolly good idea to use in a database (which it's not) it would actually be usable for larger stores.

I installed it once - just to have a play , not really worth doing on shared hosting, steep learning curve - same as x-cart. Then the free / paid versions issue. From memory tere was a Free version - then it was about 800 dollars for the pro version and the enterprise version - meant you had to sell your house to pay for it.

I just wonder what is the real reason eBay have bought them? , obviously Magento development will probably have a lot of money thrown at it, but in what direction ?

My guess is they're going to use the platform to replace their lousy ProStore service.

I'm looking forward to hearing with eBay brings to the table on this. Hopefully the free cart gets a makeover, and the paid versions get an overhaul and reduced in price. Once you know the tricks, it's actually an OK cart to work with. On the same page as X-Cart in many respects. Once you know all the ins and outs, it can be quite a good program to use.

X.Commerce uses our brand colors and X-Cart comes up 1st when you google "x.commerce" or "x-commerce"

My 3 tweets on the topic:

Magento Commerce makes one step to perfection: takes "X Commerce" name. Next step: going X-Cart
***
More on the "X" thing: X Commerce logo is in X-Cart(R) colors ... X-Cart for the win!
***
... and as you would expect, our www.x-cart.com is #1 on Google for "x commerce" request. Nice rebranding, Magento guys

While I agree it's a decent software package, it has much left to be desired. The database was designed with a "Ruby On Rails" style mentality in that everything was over-normalized and they applied EAV to a database which just does not work. We once considered them as a platform but with our amount of data it would have cost more in hardware then it was worth to run the database by itself. Even with the heavily customized x-cart frontend and backend we can run our entire site on 1 web server and 1 database server. It would have required far more for just Magento.

If eBay decides to remove that EAV bullshit we'll consider it again.
