Default New Checkout process - feedback requested

Hi guys, we have been working on an improved checkout process for a while now, and would like some actual store owner feedback. While I think this works well, we are always trying to improve/streamline things, so be brutally honest and let me know what we can do to make it even better. What do you think works well? What do you think does NOT work well? What can we add/change to improve it?

Please note that this is just a 'skeleton' and there is no actual design here. I'm looking for feedback on the layout/process only, not colors or graphics, as those are customized for the individual client. Also note that this is NOT available as an add-on, only as part of a custom design project with us.

Our design essentially creates a two step checkout process:

1. The login screen with an expanding form. This only shows the billing address by default and then expands by checking a checkbox if the customer wants to ship to a different address or register as a customer. If the customer is already logged in, this screen is skipped entirely.

2. All of the checkout options are now on one screen. The choices at the left (shipping and payment method) update the totals and payment form on the right. The customer can also edit their billing and shipping info by clicking on the link to the right of their info.

We have also cleaned up the shopping cart by putting the data into a simple table and explaining why shipping is not displayed if a customer does not log in first. We found that it was confusing people when the shipping on the cart was different than when they logged in. We also found that people were mistakenly hitting the 'delete item' button instead of update, so we have made it a little more mistake-proof. Keeping the data in a table keeps the scrolling to a minimum, thus keeping the 'action' button (proceed to secure checkout) visible.

I have attached screenshots of the cart, login screen and checkout screen below. Thanks in advance!

Looks very nice.
On screenshot 3, with the payment methods and shipping methods, does the page actually refreshed when a customer hits that radio button? Or does it dynamicly refreshes with AJAX or something else, so the customer stays at the same page without page refresh?

Really too bad you don't offer it as an addon. Even without support I would be interested.

Right now it refreshes the page, but we should have it Ajax-ified shortly

I like this a lot - it's very well presented so people can understand and see all relevant information clearly. Is there a reason why you don't use a progress bar of sorts - obviously everything you see about good checkout design advocates the use of some way of showing the customer their progress through the system, and the steps remaining. With such a compact process, I would have thought you would want to be making an even bigger point that this is step 1 of (only) 2 for e.g.?

Hey Paul...moving this over to the Member Websites forum. I actually did have a progress bar in there, but it seemed pointless with only one real step. Can easily be turned back on though...guess it is a personal preference

Come on...with all the opinions around here there MUST be more of you who can give some feedback on this! Negative or positive, I'm looking for as much detail as possible!

I would include thumbnail images in the invoice page. According to shop.org this greatly reduces cart abandonment rates.

On our current site (not X-cart) we found it did reduce abandonment.

We are working on 2 new x-cart sites including moving our current site over to x-cart.

Hi Brian, I assume you mean the cart page? On the invoice page, the customer has already checked out

I really like it Padraic!

One question: In your screen shots, you have USPS listed as an example. Any issues with having multiple shipping choices? In other words, I'd need to have USPS and UPS available under the shipping column. Other than that, it's the best, and most simple process I've seen. It takes the "fear" out of checkout because it's so simple.
