I vary the res depending on the target audience; the older the audience the smaller the resolution, the more technically savvy the larger the resolution, but in general 1024X768.

I still go for a min of 800 x 600

It is for general info only. You need to determine your own visitors demographics. I usually design for the 1024x768 crowd, as anyone who is still on 800x600 probably doesn't know how to use an e-commerce site anyway

I figure Im selling to businesses and business people with newer comps. I think I'll keep it at 1024 x 768.

Just remember to account for scrollbars and possibly menus on the side. 950 is usually a good size if designing for 1024x768
