Smarty syntax not working - Xcart 5.2

I am trying to customize featured product list on frontpage by customizing template file and trying to add some conditions. But in tpl files it is not allowed me to use smarty syntax like: assign, increments, var_dumo etc.

Hello!

That's right - X-Cart 5 doesn't use Smarty as the template engine.

Please refer to the documentation for developers at http://kb.x-cart.com/ - it may help you to understand how to customize the behaviour and appearance of X-Cart 5 based websites.

Feel free to ask in these forums should you have questions on a topic missed in the documentation.

X-Cart 5 uses Flexy as a template engine.
There is an article in our knowledge base describing the basics of this "language"

Please note that you will need to re-deploy your store after making any changes to the templates located in <X-Cart>/skins/ folder make them show up on the storefront.

Also, I forgot to mention that if you enable the developer mode in your store, there will be no need in rebuilding the store cache after editing template files.
All changes will be implemented instantly in that case.
