Currently, the zooming capabilities takes the uploaded image size as the regular width.

We have been trying to edit with CSS to make sure the max width of the zoomed images is a percentage of the browser size (to prevent scrolling).

However, the zoom is controlled with javascript. Is there a way to edit this?

In X-Cart 5.3.x the file that controls the zoom function is this one:
customer/product/details/controller.js

You should create a custom module that will decorate the \XLite\View\Product\Details\Customer\Page\APage and replace the link to the default controller.js file with a link to your custom js file added by that module.
