I need to add though - fixing validation errors may not help speed or ranking but it certainly helps to have compliant site up to the standard so it displays as close as possible the same in all browsers. With that said keep in mind every browser has its own quirks especially IE which does not obey anything...
FF in my opinion is the most WC3 compliant browser
