Default Replacing Categories Text w/ Images

I'd like to change my text catgories; I'd rather have linked gifs or jpegs instead. Skin1.css controls much of the cart's look, but I don't believe I can make this type of change by adjusting that file (I could be wrong).

I looked for the answer, before posting this one. If this has already been answered, please point me to that thread. If not, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

You mean you want to change your category menu with rollover images?

Nothing as fancy as rollovers, just images. (Although rollovers would be cool.)

osCommerce allows you to have an image for a category/sub-category. The images for sub-categories are shown when you select the parent category e.g. if the parent is "Jewellery" and this is what you select then you would see images for all the sub-categories within "Jewellery" such as "Bracelets", "Pendants", "Rings" etc. As a customer I would want to see an image of the "Bracelet" family before digging further into specific models.

The only way I know to do this is manually - creating a static html menu in place of the dynamically generated categories.tpl.

To respond to the post above by alexg, you CAN have an image and description for each category/sub-category - just like Oscommerce

No, not quite. I wanted to polish up the CATEGORIES listing. The standard text links are a little dull.

Then I think the best way to control the look and feel is to develop all your categories and create an html page of your own design with links that point to the categories and replace the original template with this file.

You could setup GDlib to create the images with text in them on the fly or create it in flash and get it to pull the information from the database.

thats what we did on http://www.hom.gb.com/shop/ the category nav at the top is dynamically created that way.
