Default Parts inventory - products made of parts and subparts?

So I'm looking to build a shop for an assembler whose products consist of parts and parts of parts.

Fictional example:

a car kit consists of an engine, body and four wheels. Each wheel consists of a rim and a tire.

Customers can only buy cars, but I want a car to consist of
- body
- engine
- 4 wheel kits, each consisting of a tire and a rim.

When I sell a car, I want the inventory control to decrement one body, one engine, four rims and four tires.

Can I do that?

Would X-configurator be the best bet?

That might work.

I can't figure how to do the nested bundles the client would like to see, but it might work.

In other words, to use my initial example, I can create a "tire", and have that available, unavailable or bundled

When I create the "wheel" bundle, though, it can only be available or unavailable, but cannot be bundled.

I just talked to him and I'm not sure that's a dealbreaker. He may be able to do parts inventory through Quickbooks.

His big thing is that being a manufacturer who does direct to consumer sales, he wants to know when he has to reorder parts, but of course these parts and not available to the consumer.

Another example would be a computer systems integrator who sells say 3 computers, paired with a variety of monitors and keyboards.

He wants to be able to build customer-facing products by selecting a computer, monitor and keyboard, not a by selecting a case, cpu, gpu, RAM, HDD, DVD, motherboard, fan, power supply, monitor and keyboard.

A better example would be that he wants to sell a lamp and wants to bundle a lamp and a lampshade, but he wants a lamp to consist of a base, riser pipe, power cord, shade attachment and bulb. The different variants of those parts would result in a few hundred products and it would be easy to forget one when he creates a new product, so he'd like assemblies he can bundle and create bundles of bundles.

I still have to play with the X-Configurator demo a bit more and see if I can work something out.

That and Ubercart Product Kits are the most promising so far (the latter of which definitely won't do the nesting thing).

Thanks!

With x-cart you can definitely add the products and make them not available for sale. I don't know if that works with some sort of bundle product for sale though. Sometimes customers are looking for too much out of shopping carts. From your description, he's really looking for a cart that also doubles as a MRP(manufacturing resource planning) Solution as well. Most carts are not going to be able to do that without doing some custom integration into an existing MRP platform. MRP platforms are usually also much more money than any shopping cart software I've come across...just some food for thought.

Thanks Jonathon,

That's the essence of the discussion I was having with him today. That is, he's trying to mix two functions that most businesses wouldn't mix and I think he's okay with that, but still wanted to see if there was a solution.

So what I found with bundling is this
- yes, I can make it so the indvidual constituent parts are not for sale

- but I can't make it so that it appears like a single product.

Even when I have configuration fields disabled, so that they are not present to the customer, they still get a "Configure" button, which takes them to Step 1 (even though there's nothing there to configure).

At that point they get a Clear Configuration Slots option, which of course I don't want to present either.

So I've looked around and this is the most promising option I could find, but it's really designed with something utterly different in mind.

I do thank you a lot for your time though. It saved me a lot of time looking for how to do this in X-Cart

Hi Rick_decckard,

Thank you for taking interest in our software and welcome aboard!

X-Configurator seems to be a good fit for your project, but it can't sell pre-made bundles unless it is modified to do so. Such customization is feasible, however.

You are welcome to contact us with any questions.

Thanks for the posts. I was trying to solve this problem as well. I very surprised this isn't a standard function of any xcart version. this is known as an inventory assembly and its very common in many businesses.

Almost all accounting software has this built in, why wouldn't the cart?
