We are looking to offer a free catalog download to each customer when they check out.

Is there a way to automatically add a product to the shopping cart when someone enters another item in to the cart?

We can set up so each product ordered has a catalog download with it, but if they order more than one item, they get multiple keys.

Or we can put a static link in the receipt - but we were looking for something a bit more personalized with it.

I am wondering why you would need a key for a free catalog
X-Cart does not support such functionality out of the box at this moment. It has to be custom coded.

Well that is what we have at current - but we are looking to work with free mp3s added to the cart etc in the future so basically if you didn't know it was available, it would be a freebie added to every order.

It is certainly possible, but a bit complex. I think an admin interface for this feature would definitely be required. You need a way to specify the free product. Either one page in the admin, perhaps just a setting, or even a way to tie a free product, or multiple free products to each for sale product in the admin.

Its going to take some planning to do this correctly and make sure it works the way you want.
