The above link adds to the cart ok. So I can add this to the web page I designed. BUT it does not have the same functionality as the add cart button on the product page. I would like the 2 buttons to be the same. There is supposed to be a popup giving the user options. But that doesnt happen. It just shows them the product page. at this point the user has no idea if the product was added or not.

Unfortunately, this is not something that can be achieved with a link.
You should check the JavaScript and PHP code to understand how this is implemented on the product page and add a similar logic to your page.
