Re: X-Cart 5 Released and changes of HelpDesk authorization form
We've operated our online store for around 8 or 9 years now (started way back with 4.0.13). So from our perspective as merchants, I love the thought of a shopping cart having solid foundations. If everything that's said about that is true, the future of X-Cart 5 is sure to be a bright one. There is no point building a new shopping cart and getting the foundations wrong. Simple/easy upgrades... all I can say is "wow!". And an easy buy and install modules function via an 'App Store' style interface is a dream come true... Let's just hope X-Cart 5 lives up to our expectations and that Qualiteam treat bugs with absolute priority rather than concentrating on enhancements and new functionality, which has been the case with 4.X for many years.
However, having said that, unfortunately it will be a while before we contemplate upgrading our 4.4.5 store to 5.X. The lack of maturity of X-Cart 5 is akin to a teenager riding a skateboard without a helmet (the helmet will come only after lessons are learnt the hard way) . There is also the issue concerning the lack of modules compared to 4.X. and the fact that developers will need time to learn and adjust to the new architecture is also worth thinking about. No-one wants to be a guinea pig and while new store owners may jump onboard the X-Cart 5 train without blinking an eyelid, experienced store owners, in my opinion, have too much at stake if they jump too early. While we're not looking to jump onboard X-Cart 5 just yet (stability, maturity and lack 3rd party modules being the biggest concern), I'm wondering if there are any experienced store owners who are? And finally, lets all hope X-Cart 5 is the beginning of something truly amazing. And congratulations to everyone who contributed with testing, ideas and its development... Just can't wait to get onboard!

XC4 is not out. 4.6.2 will be released soon. As Tony has already mentioned X-Cart 4 can be purchased by following "Products" -> "X-Cart Classic" link. X-Cart 4 extensions can be purchased from the following page: http://www.x-cart.com/extensions/modules

Re: X-Cart 5 Released and changes of HelpDesk authorization form
Any news on the XC5 licence? We were told that the product would need a upgrade subscription ($99) to upgrade after the first year. Is this still the case?
The advert on the pricing page happily advertises the lifetime license but no mention is made of an upgrade subscription. Still looking for small print where it tells us the limitation on transferring licences to new urls...

Re: X-Cart 5 Released and changes of HelpDesk authorization form
Hi Mick!
Let me clarify, X-Cart license is lifetime. It means, you can use the store based on X-Cart 5 as long as you want to and only pay for it once. Subscription for upgrades is $99 per year. It means that in order to upgrade X-Cart 5 store to future version after one year of usage, you would need to prolong a subscription. However, you are not forced to do so. For instance, if you build a store based on X-Cart 5, implemented needed features and do not require receiving new ones and bug-fixes, you can choose not to prolong upgrade subscription. Do not worry about that. If you want to change URL for your X-Cart 5 store, you can do it with no limitations. |

Re: X-Cart 5 Released and changes of HelpDesk authorization form
Okay at least we know.
This does mean that every year XC5 gets $99 dearer than the overall XC4 equivalent and even though technically it seems far better than XC4, it still struggles compared to other carts. Many developers and end users will be making the same decision as myself. Do I go with XC5 or change, either way there is a learning curve. I would sooner pay $699 or ($499 upgrade) for a "proper" lifetime licence as with XC4 that includes upgrades. As it is Magento is looking very attractive despite its PayPal ownership. If I am going to change anyway... What do other forum members think?

If XC 5 lives up to its hype $99 a year update fee is very reasonable. |
