Default back to default theme after "clear template cache"

Hi all
Ive just moved a friends site on to a dev server and ive been trying to customise its skin. I edited the relavent files but after performing a compile the changes were not reflected and I lost all the text in my admin area so i rolled it back.

After reading around this forum i decided to perform a "clear template cache" but this has really caused me some problems. Rather than updated version of the skin I now see the default theme with "This is a demo store powered by the..." although the menus etc have stayed the same.

What an earth has happend and why has the skin gone. I must add that I am not the original developer.

Any help/pointers would be greatly apreciated.

You need to change DB and site info in config.php if you haven't done it yet. Also roll back a file replaces that file with the original stock version of the file and in some cases you will see the default xcart theme

Hi thanks for the speedy response.
Firstly I edited the config and had the site running. Secondly I worded my post incorrectly as when I said that i performed a "compile" and then "rolled back" I meant a "restore all". would this have caused the problem?
I only encountered the problem after the "clear template cache" although the compile did not work correctly which is why I tried the clear.

"restore all" copies all default original xcart templates from skin1_original to skin1 overriding all templates so you lose everything you have changed. So yes this is your problem. "clear template cache" will not affect the templates itself just the cache which then is auto generated again from the templates. If you do not have a copy of skin1 before you did "restore all" then you will have to start all over again

Thanks thats good to know luckily I have a back up. Could you tell me why compiling removes the text from the admin menus and buttons even on the form submit buttons?

Thanks again

I wouldnt do that. When you compile templates the process replaces language variables used in the templates with the actual values. So if later you decide for instance that you want to change "Add to cart" to "Add to basket" you will have to open each template when this button label is used and replace it there instead of just changing one language variable
